On February 7th, I participated in a panel discussion at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Germany. Every year, the trade show addresses every sector of the fresh produce industry, this year attracting 3,200 exhibitors and 78,000 attendees from around the world.
Sponsored by Global Women Fresh, the panel itself discussed how women could move up in the produce industry. One of the great benefits now is the industry’s need for more structure, including multiple layers of branding, marketing, sales and customer engagement.
While the stated topic was advancement opportunities for women, I returned with an even greater conviction about what anyone who aspires to a top five position should be doing today to get there.
First, it’s important to remember few women or men make it into the highest positions within an organization. It doesn’t just happen. Those who succeed actively manage their careers by doing several things. These include avoiding lateral positions and pursuing upward moves that can fill remaining skill gaps instead. Also, they often engage with mentors and others who know how to map their careers.
Which leads to the three burning questions:
- To which top five position within your organization do you aspire?
- After studying the path that person followed, what steps will you take, starting today, to get there?
- Are you open to opportunities that could fill skill gaps, even if they weren’t necessarily what you were anticipating?
Berlin was a great experience that left me even more excited about sharing opportunities with those who want to make the next, best step for their careers. When a new opportunity is presented to you either internally or externally, I encourage you to take the time to learn more and determine if the role could help you round out your experience. Take calls from recruiters and seek internal opportunities that are outside of your comfort zone. All are great ways to actively manage your career.
